Displaced villagers cross a makeshift bridge over a whitewater river of excess rainwater from cyclone Idai. The village Kopa was struck by a devastating landslide. During the night, huge boulders came rolling down the surrounding mountains while most villagers were sleeping in their homes. Humanitarian organizations estimate over 200 people were killed.

The small farmer's compound of Rathmore was struck by a huge flood of mud and rocks during cyclone Idai. More than 10 people were killed, including at least three young children who were taken by the stream and were never found.

Displaced people in a small IDP camp set up by NGOs, just outside the flooding zone in Buzi district. A day after cyclone Iday hit Mozambique, the river Buzi started to flood from the excess rain that fell upstream. Vast areas of farmland and villages in Buzi district flooded. Many people survived for up to days in trees or on rooftops of large buildings, drinking the floodwater to survive.

They provide psychological aid and distribute drugs for chronic illnesses like diabetes, asthma, and HIV. People walk for hours through the jungle to reach the clinic because their villages have been cut off by the cyclone.

Displaced villagers share a tent in a small DP camp in Estaquinha, just outside the flooding zone of the Buzi river. Tents have to be shared by many people because they are in scarce supply. Many still sleep outside where are exposed to malaria.
